Founded by James O'Brien and Sean Kennedy, Rant Radio is a commercial-free Internet radio station broadcasting 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from Langely, British Columbia. Sure, the sound could be better, and getting connected is a pain, but if you're tired of the bland, corporate-owned stations that dominate the airways these days, RantRadio is a welcome alternative.

No subject is taboo. And no opinion is too crazy to be heard. The result is a completely free-form discussion of subjects ranging from the United States government's anti-drug policy to the art of money laundering.

On "WhatTheHell!?!," their popular Sunday night show, listeners are especially encouraged to join in on the mayhem, either through ICQ (an Internet chat program), or Internet Radio Chat, or by phoning in to a toll-free number. Whereas most Web-based radio stations feature a one-way, hip-muzak model, the battle cry of these wild Canadians is interactivity at any cost.

O'Brien and Kennedy let loose on the NetSlaves about why piracy in all its various forms is a good thing. And if that's not enough to enrage the drummer of a certain aging rock band, they also discuss how RantRadio is being mirrored to parts of the world where it's illegal to broadcast controversial material.

Ranting in Real Time (1 MB)
Kennedy and O'Brien attribute Rant Radio's success to a high level of listener involvement promoted by two-way ICQ exchanges.

A Network of Volunteers (1.16 MB)
Why Rant Radio's master plan eschews commercial sponsorship in favor of non-commercial volunteerism and site-mirroring.

The Canadian Connection (777 KB)
Kennedy and O'Brien explain why Canada's cyber-broadcasting laws are less restrictive than those in the US.

In Praise of Napster (926 KB)
Rant Radio's founders tout the virtues of Napster and other free-music-finding software.
